Alternatives
The best Carl-bot alternatives
Carl-bot has no tickets and levels are entirely premium. Vetox gives unlimited self-role panels, tickets and uncapped levelling free on Starter.
Carl-bot’s reaction roles are the category benchmark and its Tagscript language — conditionals, variables, maths, embeds, and the ability to call Carl-bot’s own commands from inside a tag — has no real equivalent among the bots checked here. People leave anyway, because there is no ticket system at all, levels sit entirely behind Patreon, and its per-server Patreon pricing reaches $7.99 a month for a single community.
What you would be giving up
Stated plainly, because Carl-bot earns its reputation on a narrow set of things it does very well.
Tagscript is a real scripting language, not a custom-commands feature. Conditionals, variables, maths, Discord-object access and command invocation, at up to 25,000 characters per tag — and unlimited tags even on the free tier.
Reaction roles are free and complete, with only the timed-role variant gated to Patreon. Logging is comparably generous: roughly 24 event types with no premium gate and no documented retention cap, which most competitors in this niche paywall at least part of.
Suggestions ship as a full free module — approve, deny, consider and implement states, an anonymous mode, and decision DMs — with no premium marker anywhere in its documentation.
Multi-server pricing genuinely rewards operators running several communities. Five servers cost
$24.99/month total, self-assigned by the subscriber with !addpremium and !removepremium — better
value per server than almost any single-server competitor once a third community joins.
The reasons people actually leave
No tickets, at all. No ticket module, no panels, no transcripts — the single largest functional gap against MEE6, ProBot, Dyno and Vetox, and a server needing support ticketing has to run a second bot regardless of what else Carl-bot covers.
Levels are entirely premium, described in Carl-bot’s own documentation as “a premium feature offered to our Patrons as a way to show our gratitude for helping keep the bot alive” — there is no free allowance to soften the wall.
Notifications cover only Twitch and YouTube, and free Twitch is a single channel. No Reddit, no RSS, no third alert source at any price — Carl-bot’s “Feeds” module sounds like syndication but is actually internal announcements and reminders, an easy thing to misread from the name alone.
The entry price is the highest single-server rate checked in this comparison at $7.99/month, with no annual discount found and no free-tier levels to offset it.
Billing runs through Patreon, and the vendor’s own docs devote a troubleshooting section to it failing — “wait at least 10 minutes,” edit your Patreon profile to force a resync, then email support with a receipt screenshot if that does not resolve it.
Trigger overflow fails silently. Passing the 50-trigger free limit (75 on Patreon) does not produce an error; the excess simply stops working, chosen alphabetically — a genuinely surprising failure mode for anyone who has not read the documentation closely.
The alternatives, compared
| Bot | Self-roles free cap | Levels | Tickets | Scripting / automation | Notifications | Entry price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Carl-bot | free, full system | entirely premium | not offered | Tagscript, unlimited tags free | Twitch 1, YouTube 5 free | $7.99/mo (1 server) |

| ProBot | free auto-role and self-roles | free, text + voice | free, with transcripts | none | paid, Twitch + YouTube | $5/mo Tier 1 |
| YAGPDB | free autorole, voice roles | not offered — has reputation instead | free | Go-template scripting, 1M free operations | Reddit 20, YouTube 10, Twitch 3 free | undisclosed on-site, Patreon “from $5/mo” |
| Zira | free, 100 per guild combined | not offered | not offered | none | not offered | $2 / 30 days |
| Vetox | free, unlimited panels | free, text + voice, no cap on rewards | free, 200 concurrent | 41 built-in systems instead of a script layer | 8 platforms, Basic $4.99/mo | free; Basic $4.99/mo |
YAGPDB — a free automation engine, with tickets Carl-bot lacks
YAGPDB is the automation archetype this category gets compared against: a real templating language with conditionals, loops, a per-member key-value database and regex triggers, backed by a 1,000,000-operation free compute budget. Its Advanced Automoderator models triggers, conditions and effects explicitly rather than as toggles — 25 rules free, 150 on Patreon — and tickets, custom embeds and custom interactions all ship free, which Carl-bot has none of.
The trade is real: YAGPDB requires programming, not clicking. There is no natural-language path and no automatic setup — an administrator who wants Tagscript’s ergonomics without writing a script will find YAGPDB less approachable, not more. And its own pricing is not published anywhere on its site; a buyer has to leave for Patreon or Discord’s own store to learn the cost, and slots bought through each route cannot be transferred to the other.
Verdict: the pick if scripting power and free tickets matter more than a friendly dashboard, and if an unpublished price is acceptable.
Zira — a cheaper, deeper reaction-role specialist with nothing else
Zira answers a narrower question than Carl-bot even attempts: self-assignable roles, and nine distinct mechanics for them — normal, once, remove, toggle, timed, temporary, auto, voice and DM — plus giveaways, polls and suggestions layered on top. 100 free reaction roles per guild, combined across every type, is a large single pool, and at $2 per 30 days or $50 for life, it is the cheapest premium tier found anywhere in this research.
It has no moderation, no tickets, no levels and no logging — Zira is roles-plus-adjacent, not a platform, and several of its premium limits are simply described as “bigger” with no published numbers.
Verdict: worth running alongside something else if reaction roles are the whole requirement and budget is tight. Not a Carl-bot replacement on its own.
MEE6, in brief
MEE6’s own comparison table marks 31 of 37 rows with a cross on its free column, including Reaction Roles, so it does not solve what a reader leaving Carl-bot for cost reasons is looking for — it costs more ($11.99/month list) for a thinner free tier. Its case is ten social-alert platforms and a lifetime price, not reaction roles or automation.
Where Vetox fits
This answers “there is no ticket system and levels cost extra,” not “Tagscript is not powerful enough” — nothing above, including Vetox, matches Tagscript’s scripting depth, and that stays true here.
Self-Roles ship free and unlimited on Starter: unlimited panels across button, dropdown and reaction modes, all five role modes, with DM notifications — 20 roles per reaction panel and 25 per button or dropdown panel, the same on every tier. Against Carl-bot’s free reaction-role system, the practical difference is everything built around it on the same free plan: levels (text and voice, with rank rewards carrying no cap in code), tickets (3 panels, 200 concurrent), and 148 free log event types — more than six times Carl-bot’s roughly 24, without a Patreon dependency.
Notifications reach 8 platforms at Basic ($4.99/month) — Twitch, YouTube, Kick, Reddit, Bluesky, Steam, RSS and podcasts — against Carl-bot’s two, capped at one free Twitch channel.
No scripting language is required to reach the same outcomes. Where Carl-bot’s Tagscript and YAGPDB’s templates ask an administrator to write logic, the equivalent behaviour on Vetox — auto-responders, embed messages, auto-interactions, suggestions — is 41 purpose-built systems configured from a dashboard. That is a different trade, not a claim to out-configure a scripting language: a server that has already built a complex Tagscript setup is not looking to rebuild it, and this is the argument for a server that has not built one yet. The full reaction-role field is covered in the best Discord reaction-role bots, and what gets paywalled across the levelling category specifically in which Discord bots charge for levelling.
Which alternative to pick
| If you are leaving because | Switch to |
|---|---|
| You need tickets and scripting power together | YAGPDB — free tickets, 1M-operation template budget |
| Reaction roles are the entire requirement, cheaply | Zira — 100 free roles combined, $2 per 30 days |
| You want levels, tickets and notifications on one free plan | Vetox — 41 systems, no Patreon dependency |
| Ten social platforms matter more than automod depth | MEE6 — accept the thinner free tier for the reach |
| Nothing — Tagscript is the actual requirement | Vetox — with Carl-bot alongside if that one niche is essential |
Frequently asked questions
Is Carl-bot actually free? Yes, for a genuinely broad set: reaction roles, all 8 automod filters, roughly 24 log event types, unlimited Tagscript tags, and a full suggestions module all ship with no payment. Levels, personalization, sticky messages and most of the notification headroom require Patreon.
How much does Carl-bot cost? $7.99/month for one server, rising to $12.99, $16.99 and $24.99 for two, three and five servers, billed through Patreon by server count rather than as a flat monthly fee.
What is the best free alternative to Carl-bot? Vetox, if levels, tickets and notifications need to sit on the same free-to-Basic plan as self-roles. YAGPDB, if scripting depth is the requirement — though its own price is not published anywhere on its site. Zira, if reaction roles alone are the need.
Does Carl-bot have tickets? No. There is no ticket module, no panels and no transcripts in its documentation — a server that needs support ticketing has to run a second bot alongside Carl-bot.
Why did my Carl-bot custom trigger stop working? Triggers over the free limit of 50 (75 on Patreon) do not produce an error — they simply stop functioning, and Carl-bot disables them in alphabetical order once the count is exceeded.
